Cantus Presents: "Covers: Pure Funk"

Get up, get down, get yourself ready to dance and sing along to Funky hits that keep your heart thumping! Join Cantus as they put their soulful harmonic spin on tunes you know and love. Featuring the music of Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones, Earth Wind & Fire, and more, Cantus’ Pure Funk setlist is a testament to the timeless power of groove.

The “engaging” (New Yorker) low-voice ensemble Cantus is widely known for its trademark warmth and blend, innovative programming and riveting performances of music ranging from the Renaissance to the 21st century. The Washington Post has hailed the Cantus sound as having both “exalting finesse” and “expressive power” and refers to the “spontaneous grace” of its music making. The Philadelphia Inquirer called the group nothing short of “exquisite.”

As one of the nation’s few full-time vocal ensembles, Cantus has come to prominence with its distinctive approach to creating music. Working without a conductor, the members of Cantus rehearse and perform as chamber musicians, each contributing to the entirety of the artistic process, creating programs that give voice to shared human experiences. As the Star Tribune has written, “The main hallmark of the Cantus sound has always been sheer quality and an unbroken belief in the special way that vocal music has of warming and invigorating the human spirit.”

Allison Dyg Band Independence Day Pre-Party!

Hailing from western Wisconsin and shaped by humble beginnings, Allison Dyg is an artist who refuses to follow the beaten path. Forged by the pressures of life and driven by an unrelenting hunger to create, she channels raw emotion into music that defies convention. Her sound is unapologetically gritty, unfiltered, and deeply authentic. She crafts songs that blend synth-heavy soundscapes, raw acoustic guitar, and haunting vocals. Her music resonates with those who embrace complexity—seeking passion, introspection, and a deeper connection in sound and lyricism.

  • Davies Student Center (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Established in 1974, the Viennese Ball is inspired by the historic Kaiser Ball housed in Vienna at the Hofburg Congress Center, the former Imperial Palace and seat of the Austrian emperors. A multi-roomed New Year’s Eve extravaganza in the style of Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elizabeth’s “Ball at Court,” the Kaiser Ball features thousands of flowers, wonderful food, and a wide variety of musical events including Salonmusik, Volkmusik, and, of course, orchestras playing Viennese waltzes.

With the Davies Center completely transformed, one can Waltz and swing dance to Big Band standards in the Grand Ballroom, polka in the Festival Hall, & enjoy music and fun in the American Bar. Since its beginning, most music and performances are presented by students and staff in the Music & Theater Arts Department.

Through attendance and support of the Ball, more than $1.5 million has been raised for music, service and international study scholarships and awards.
